Desert Off-Road Racing, Like Our First Ever United States Racing

Webcasts!

Norman Motorsports Outclasses Field

On Saturday, March 27 at Las
Vegas Nevada, Roger Normans Team of Off-Road Fanatics and Specialists Out-ran and Out-classed a field of desert off-road racers to overall the 25th running of the MINT 400.

It was obvious to any desert racing fan in attendance that Normans team 'gamed' this event.

At the finish line, after the champagne was sprayed and drank all over the podium, the team admitted their strategy and enjoyed every part of winning this classic desert race.

In post-race interviews, team leaders mentioned their race-tracking strategies and the actions of replacing their tires at EVERY pit stop.

Not that they needed to replace their BF Goodrich tires at every pit stop, but, they did so, to ensure victory over a nasty-nasty desert course put together by the SNORE master of disaster race organizers.

Not that the Nevada MINT 400 race course needed any more
mentions of how difficult it really was, everyone now knows, this is basically a torture test for desert off-road racing tires. Period.

Noticed by Off-Road1.com was the new Yokohama 'project' tires, only three weeks new, piled up at contingency on Friday. We may never know how well they did, because that same day at qualifying, Yoko's Cameron Steele couldn't keep his new tires on the ground as he flipped, rolled and crashed his Geiser built truck earlier that day.

Ruining any chances of a top finish in this 25th running of the event. Later on raceday on Saturday, Steele mentioned lots of
undiagnosed pain in his neck, foot and elsewhere.

Some HOT NEWS>>>
*Looks like 85 of 215 finished. 89 racers completed all the laps per their class requirements, 1 was disqualified and 3 timed out.
*Norman/Roeseler 1st place in Trophy Trucks and Overall. General Tires BJ Baldwin 2nd Overall in Trophy Truck #96 (In Bobby's truck, his Fathers!). General Tires Rick Johnson 3rd in Trophy Truck and 4th Overall then TJ Flores.

*Jason McNeil had a hub come off at speed and crashed hard, status not known.
Some video dude showed Off-Road1.com footage of it. Mega wad with tire shooting off into the pits smashing someones chase truck. Could've been very-very bad. Everyone had the deer in the headlights deal going on.

*Overheard at finish. Trophy Truck #71 and Flores Class 1 talking of being held up by Heidi Steele for miles.

*
Kent Kroeker out at race mile 4 with Another transmission issue, same lost on Thursday during testing! Kroeker blew the transmission at Race mile 1, started lap 2 about the time Roeseler finish the race. Maybe MOPAR-Dodge needs a REAL Desert Racing Off-Road Source?!

*LETNER #3 Overall, 1st place in Class 1. No flats, Sponsored by Goodyear Tires.

*Maybe Class 12 win for Harmon?
*Lawrence got 3rd in Class 12.

*First reports are that in Class 3000, the most talked about, contentious, class racing in the event, Pistol Pete's Baja Lite truck defeated Greg Foutz Trophy Lites...
According to the race sanctioning body unofficial lap times beat Messer by 6:16 or 5:46. The Trophy Lites showed 2 starting side by side by the start scan time?
Bryant Shontz of Parker Arizona said today:
"What the racing community doesn't understand is the Baja Lites and the Trophy Lites are two completely different machines! Different motors and vastly different suspensions. Different weights. Being proud because you beat an under powered, under suspended truck is like being proud you beat up a cripple."

Hey Greg Foutz, where's the PR stuff now...OUCH!

*Heidi Steele (driver of record) wins 7200/7/6 or what ever the mini TT class is, Jamie Campbell and husband Cameron also drove

Roger Norman Poles MINT 400
Roger Norman qualified first today taking the pole position for the historical Mint 400 “The Great American Desert Race” which will run tomorrow Saturday March 27th.

The qualifying course was 3 miles long and consisted of about 2+ miles of actual race course. Norman was the 23rd car to qualify out of 61 entries, and completed the course in 4min 11seconds. Finishing four seconds behind the Norman Motorsports Crystal Bay Casino #8 truck was Chad Ragland in Bobby Baldwins #96 truck, and falling in third was BJ Baldwin #97 by one second.

The Mint 400 is a grueling 106 mile loop race that is primarily rock and silt. “This is a really really hard course,” said Norman. “It is not like Baja where you have a lot of wide areas to pass. Most of this course is tight and technical.” Norman will enter this race for the first time ever with very little knowledge of the area and the local terrain. “Being first off the line, the course will not be burned in yet, so we are planning on taking it easy and not making any mistakes,” Norman comments. “After going to rally school in Finland, I picked up a few things including some new communication methods that we are going to try with our co-pilot Eric Branstrom.”

The Norman Motorsports team is planning their first pit to be a fuel stop, tire change and driver change where Larry Roesler will take the wheel. In the early 70’s Roesler raced in the Mint 400 on a dirt bike, but has not had the opportunity to race in a trophy truck until this weekend. There may be additional pit stops to gain more traction with fresh BFGoodrich Baja T/A KR tires throughout the day.

“This is a very historical race in the off road community,” said Norman, who’s family was involved in the early days. In 1972, the third year of the race, Norman’s step-father Bill Muncey was the Grand Marshall. The greatest hydroplane racer in history continually told the story about this race and being invited to run a buggy, which he claims was the hardest thing that he had ever done in his life and hoped that no one would ever invite him to race another off road race ever again! And now his step-son, Roger Norman, will take the green flag first from the 2010 Grand Marshall
.

MINT 400 Ready To Go Off

Hundreds of racers are busy preparing and testing their off-road race vehicles for the return of the 2010 SNORE/General Tire Mint 400, set to take place just 25 minutes North of Las Vegas on March 27th. The historic race was started by Norm Johnson, former public relations director for the Del Webb Hotel, and was resurrected by the SNORE (Southern Nevada Off Road Enthusiasts) racing organization just 3 years ago. “General Tire was very excited to team up with SNORE to bring back the legendary race in 2008 and 2010 will prove to be even more exciting with an aggressive stable of racers and engaging events,” said Travis Roffler, director of marketing, General Tire. “The Mint 400 is one of the top racing titles to win in off-road racing and we are very proud and committed to keep the spirit of the Mint 400 race going for years to come.”

The SNORE/General Tire Mint 400 will once again return to the popular Moapa Indian reservation at the Moapa Travel Plaza Exit 75 (Valley of Fire Rd.) off of Interstate 15. Three special spectator areas have been set-up alongside the course in high-speed, action-packed areas for fans to view the race. The Moapa tribe will have shuttles running to these areas. There will be numerous food, beer and merchandise vendors set up at the Moapa Travel Plaza.

Added to this year’s race course is the infamous Rock Garden, a treacherous section of course run over shale rock beds and small boulders, with ditches and “gotcha’s” strewn throughout. The last time the course ran through the Rock Garden was 23 years ago.

Over 250 entries are expected to enter the SNORE/General Tire Mint 400 and there is already much buzz about the events leading up to race day.

Thursday March 25th , fans, racers and the Media are invited to be a part of the FanFest Meet & Greet on Fremont Street East (between Las Vegas Blvd and 8th St.) from 6 pm - 8 pm for a chance to meet the drivers, get their autographs, take pictures, and pick up some swag from the teams!
At 8:30 pm Thurs night, General Tire will crown the 2010 Mint 400 Queen on the 1st Street Stage, located on Fremont Street and 1st Street, under the Fremont Street Experience. Friday, March 26th starting at 9 am and lasting throughout the day until 5:30 pm, every race car entered in the race will parade down Fremont Street for Technical and Contingency inspection. The parade of race vehicles starts on 1st Street & Fremont Street, heads East under the Fremont Street Experience, crosses Las Vegas Blvd., and ends at 8th Street and Fremont. Saturday, March 27th at 7 am, race officials will drop the green flag once again for the start of the historic 25th Running of the 2010 SNORE General Tire Mint 400 off-road race.
The 2010 SNORE/General Tire Mint 400 will be televised on the Versus network and set to air May 5th 2010. Check local listings for details.
