Peru confirmed as host for 2012 Dakar Rally; off-road race to end in Lima's Plaza de Armas

The press conference to announce the 2012 Dakar Rally off-road race is set to take place tomorrow in Paris, but Arturo Woodman confirmed today from France that the competition “would end in Lima,” and that Peru would host four stages (one more than previously thought) and that the closing and prize ceremony would take place on January 15 in Lima’s Plaza de Armas.

“We have received confirmation that Dakar 2012 will end in Lima. This was a special condition of the Peruvian government in order to host the race, and it’s an announcement that we are very pleased to make,” said Arturo Woodman, currently in Paris along with Eduardo Dibós, president of the Peruvian automobile club. “The prize ceremony, we would like to do in the Plaza de Armas,” he stressed.

“There will be three campsites with three route stages beginning in the south of Peru. They will come through Tacna, pass through Arequipa, Moquegua, Ica and Lima. Before the prize ceremony, drivers and their crews will be able to rest in Santa María. Afterwards, the vehicles will come in through the Vía Expresa, making a triumphant entrance so that the public can admire the cars,” Woodman explained.

On April 12, authorities from the Dakar Rally will conduct a press conference in Lima to make the official announcement and welcome Peru as part of the race. According to studies, the competition not only brings in about $70 million to the host country, but is also broadcast live on television in over 190 countries.
