International Racing Consultants (IRC) contract should be placed under Review!

At the heart of the MINT 400 2015 Race Disaster is the fact that Steve Myers company, International Racing Consultants is the lead timing, scoring and race tracking advisor and contractor for Casey Folks, BITD racing association.

For ten years, this reporter has been following and reporting on the race operations of Steve Myers company, IRC. Since his first public tracking job with SNORE, Steve has collaborated with this reporter, seeking advancements in race tracking and safety.

In an hour and one half long interview conducted Monday, March 16, Myers informed OFF-ROAD LIVE! of significant service failures IRC committed during the MINT 400 race.

One failure, had the second race, untracked at the start of the competition. This was caused by several factors. One, IRC event data crashed. On the race radio relay, Phil Membury admitted their data had not 'propogated', prior to the green flag. For twenty minutes, the online IRC display was not working.

The second failure, was not having an adequate number of tracking units available for all registered racers. Forcing the race sanction and IRC to repurpose first race tracking equipment.

IRC is blaming racers for not following directions for the second failure. This is factually not the reason for the failure. Not having minimum equipment numbers is the real reason for much of the second race confusion.

The third and most problematic issue is the lack of proper operating race protocols in place, to be followed in the event of a red-flag race situation.

The principal of the company was not present and onsite during these event challenges. For many years, lack of ownership supervision has been a problem with the IRC arrangements with BITD. There also seems to be problems with adequate personnel training between the sanction BITD and the contractor IRC.

A complete review of this race event and the IRC contract is required to get to the bottom of the failure of the 2015 MINT 400 racing event. Until this is complete, BITD racing association has my complete, lack of confidence.

The Race Disaster FallOut!

Ian Maxwell Sez:

"Besides all that, my experience at this year was sub par at best. From the start of signups, we were treated like a number not a person. The fact that this is supposed to be BITD/Mad Media's biggest event of the year, I feel like they were very unprepared. From something as simple as running out of T-Shirts and the nice whiskey bottles(with the metal labels, not the cheesy sticker), to the fact that IRC showed up without the correct amount of trackers(this is all what I was told from BITD officials directly). How is this acceptable?

After ending up finishing 4 minutes behind 1127 I raised my concerns about them possibly shortcutting the course or something because I had passed him twice on the first lap without being passed. IRC told me that they were not used for reviewing information like that. What are they for then? I then took my issue to a few different BITD officials. They all said there was nothing they could do."

Wyatt Pemberton Sez:

"Sucker....
Oh wait same here on the admin stuff. 3-XL's and 1-L equaled 4-XXL's. Never got my bottle of booze, was told to come back on Sunday.
IRC, joke!!! No tracker either, one of my guys waited 2 hours on Saurday for it, finally install, and it never worked. IRC sent a replacement one out with our chase during the race, and it didn't work either... But please keep my money IRC."

Ryan Plowman Sez:

"But those same people require us to pay +/- $300 for an IRC system that, well, sucks. Oh yeah, that's per race. Oh, and sometimes, they don't have enough, so those people that come late, aren't required. BS."

George Felix

"What do you expect for $275 a day? I wonder what the return on investment is? One or two days? Haha what a racket. It's great we have them but seems ridiculously expensive and likes been said often don't work. Maybe run by the same folks that provide Sat phones for baja. Should have been renting cell phones instead. Lol"

Pete Dutton

"IRC tracking has always been a joke, always will be. Wired directly to the batteries, per them, getting calls from my customers making sure my wiring is good because the trackers are not working gets old."

Anonymous Racer

"IRC is considered to be sub-par by a lot (possibly a majority?) of racers. It's outdated technology, overly expensive, and their customer service sucks (and I say that with all due respect). And many people have reported that it didn't work for them when they needed it to."

Anonymous Racer

"A couple of years ago I was discussing IRC's shortcomings with Diane at BITD and she said that "Casey is very loyal", which I interpret to mean that he'll stick with something lousy like IRC regardless of whether there's anything better out there."

Cronus Dillard

"That said, I can guarantee there will be at least one person who chimes in that "IRC worked for me when I needed it". And another will say, "Quit whining, racing is expensive". Then some third person will say, "It gives me peace of mind knowing that I can call them on the satellite phone." I'm not going to waste time debating it, but the fact is there are better solutions out there that cost less, and I've seen no indication that BITD is moving in that direction. So we're just farting into the wind."

From the Race Radio Relay:

We heard it all on the radio. When told to hold the vehicles at the crash site, recovery called, "I don't have a pen and paper to write car stop times!!" It will be words that will go down in infamy.

Mark Weyhrich Sez:
"the real cause of this accident was the decision to start 4 vehicles every minute. Did we really all need to get off the line in 17 +/- minutes when the track is nearly 120 miles long? It was an absolute mess right from the start. And all for what? Good TV?
Incredibly fortunate there were not more of these incidents. I know I was almost in 3 of them before the RM where this accident was."

 Cameron Steele Sez:
"This was really a bad start set up, 80 unlimited cars into white out race conditions zig zagging back and forth for 17 miles with no recon allowed in less than 20 minutes. Why? I really wanted to say something at the drivers meeting but that would have ended badly..... this should have been address as a group... hint hint

Add to that fact that 1 cars should never ever be mixed with TT's any longer based on weight, capability, height and results (results for 3 plus years prove this) and no recon lap is a bad recipe. I have been loudly saying the Trophy Trucks should not be mixed with 1s' any longer for years. Why are they?

Ken James, Blue Coyote Racing:
 "Wow - what a mess."

LOADING ENDLESS IRC & BITD HACKING>>>

Lopez Claims Race Results B-S!

Robby Gordon Joins the Parade!:
""First and Foremost I hope everyone in the ACCIDENT is ok........

But the results are NOT accurate.

When MARTELLI AND BITD did the re groupe it was done where the vehicles did not re start with the same interval as where they were stopped. BITD MARTELLI only did the first 6 cars correct and the they just started letting cars go because they said they couldnt keep up.. So here is where this conversation will turn bad, Yes its for fun desert racing for some but for others like myself its a business, THE RESULTS ARE WRONG AND LOFTON DIDNT WIN EITHER. Here is what we do know because of Timing and scoring at the end of lap 1 we had Lofton by 9 minutes and 40 or 50 seconds...

When they re raked the field then Lofton restarted around 2 ot 4 minutes minutes behind us (NOBODY KNOWS AND THERE WAS NO IRC WORKING IN LOFTONS TRUCK) not 9:40 something, So when I had a Flat at race mile 50ish the first 3 cars we connected together BJ Leading, Rob Mac second 45 seconds behind him at race mile 50 ish and were all haulling ass.... and there was no dust problems so for sure Lofton didn't make up much time on the 3 of us. So Here is where it goes all wrong.... I get a flat and change it, Lets say on a good day its 2 minutes and on a bad day change its 5 minutes the fact is Justin should have been 9+ minuted behind us but instead because of not fair RE RACKING but now he's 2 or 4 minutes as nobody knows and the reason why I say this is at one point BITD GUY said we started them every 1 minute but I know for sure thats not the case. the reason why i know this is we have stop watches in the car and BJ started 45 in fromnt of Rob Mac I started 2 minutes behind Rob Mac and Dondale started 15 seconds behing me ( in the short course I was exiting turn 3 and Dale was exiting turn 2 after the Re Rack thats about 15 seconds an at the same time Tavo was in the middle of turn 1 on the short course so he was 15 seconds behind Dale...) This allowed Lofton to get track position on us which he would have never been able to do if he would have started 9:40ish and this is why im crying Foul call by Officials not Lofton.

MINT 400 and BITD need to figure this out as its a Problem and I feel we were robbbed of VICTORY TOO and this is a BUSINESS not a hobby.

NOTE: THIS IS NOT LOFTON OR THE OTHER RACERS FAULT ITS JUST NOT A GOOD ENOUGHT TIMING AND SCORING SYSTEM AND RACE MANAGEMENT> THIS IS SUPPOSE TO BE THE BIGGEST AND BEST RACE IN THE UNITED STATES>> NOTE: LOFTON AND TEAM DID A GOOD JOB

ALSO ON ANOTHER NOTE IRC DIDNT WORK ON LOFTONS TRUCK EITHER AS I WAS THERE ASKING FOR PROOF AND THEY COUDNT DO THAT ON HIS TRUCK AS HE HAD NO DROPPED POINTS TO LOOK AT, this system should be official and accurate BUT THIS DIDNT WORK EITHER and it brings the sport back to ammature again...

They really don't know when everyone re started either NO PROOF , this is aTOTAL mess and not cool

I HOPE THE RACERS INVOLVED IN THE ACCIDENT ARE OK this Thread is not crying about the stopped race its about accurate timing both on Lalo side and on ours as we should have won too.....Answer is we need better more accurate timing and tracking, Its not the people doing the timing its the tools they are using its should have been easy to figure this out, the Dakar system we use there would have prevented the accident as the SENTENAL SYSTEM GIVES WARNINGS for a stopped vehicle or accident!! and they would have been able to re rack them correctctly and the results would be accurate.

Being a arm chair quarter back we should have just at least done a circle through the timing and scoring loop at the lap 1 finish loop and then they would have something on a computer instead of really nothing and then no working IRC on the other vehicle now we really have NOTHING except teams feeling they are ROBBED

I know its very similar on what RPM and Lalo are saying with regards to re racking timing and scoring, there not crying because they or we are sore loosers its just a fact that the race is scued and NOT ACCURATE RESULTS>>>>>>>>>

I FEEL ROBBED AND CHEATED TOO, JUST LIKE LALO""

BREAKING NEWS

 UPDATE! Monday, March 16, 2015

"Sometimes in our role as Fire, Rescue, Medical teams, we are fortunate enough to be a part of some of the most private or challenging times in people's life. Sometimes those moments are the greatest in the world. This morning was one of those:
As I arrived to see Jordan and Ryan this morning they were getting ready to sit Jordan up for the first time since the accident occurred. They put Jordan into a wheel chair and he put his legs on the stands himself. He then was able to be wheeled to see Ryan for the first time. These two are amazing men in their way to recovery. All the prayers, well wishes, positive energy are working."

Sunday, March 15, 2015

Jordan Poole and Ryan Hancock were involved in a roll over accident at the Mint 400 at mile 32. Both had been knocked unconscious initially. As Jordan unbuckled and attempted to help Ryan, their car was struck by a Trick Truck from behind at a very significant speed.

Both were transported by to the hospital by helicopter. Both are conscious and alert. Jordan is going to have a long road to recovery but has great people surrounding him. His back is broken and has already undergone one surgery. Ryan had surgery this morning for a couple things including a punctured lung and neck injury and should make a full recovery.

They can both have limited visitors of a maximum of two at a time however I am sure the families that are living in the trauma center waiting room would appreciate company and support from our off road community.

RaceDay Report
Saturday, March 14, 2015

*Two racers were injured in a multi-vehicle accident during the Mint 400 off road race near Primm, Nevada, earlier today. No spectators were involved or injured in the accident. The race was restarted at 4:45 p.m.

[Reportedly, Mike Baldi #1542, an unlimited buggy got out of shape and turned into a Trick Truck, causing the accident, damages, injuries. More info being investigated.]

Names of the racers have not been released. The race was temporarily stopped to allow medical teams time to treat the victims and remove the vehicles from the race course. Both racers were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

“Best In The Desert officials stopped the race immediately upon learning of the accident and only resumed after the injured were treated and the vehicles removed from the course.”

The accident occurred shortly before 4 p.m. during the second race of the day, which involves unlimited class race vehicles known as Trick Trucks and Class 1 buggies.

SECOND RACE COMMENCED WITH TIME ADJUSTMENTS

Race Leader Justin Lofton coming in for the win at RM 108 8:45PM

Race Leaders (Physical Lead) Justin Lofton #41 Robby Gordon, Rob Mac coming into Finish Line!

Rob Mac #6 back in the race after replacing drive-shaft.

Race Radio Relay Reporting said Jerry Whelchel #37 was destroyed and OUT and Strobel destroyed his truck.

What Happened Early in the race? At around RM32 close to a spectator area there was medical emergency that called for no less then two life flights. There is no information available what happened, who is involved etc.

Once that information becomes available and is ok to be shared we will do exactly that.

BLM asked for a stop of the race. We heard of some cars getting stopped on the course now and cars that made it past the spot in question are still racing towards the completion of lap1.

No idea how that will affect BITD's and our timing. The well being of everyone involved is obviously the number one priority.

At the start of the second race, Trick Truck #46; Troy Best, lawn darted and endoed several times. His day is done.

PIT Crew Competition Final Results

The Pit Crew Competition favorites going into the event were the teams of TSCO Racing (last years winner), Menzies Motorsports, and the Jesse Jones team, but it was a team who qualified last night to grab a spot who took home the trophy.

The Trick Truck Team of Steve Olliges #27, wins the 2015 Pit Crew Challenge!

Steve Strobel and crew laid down a faster time in the head to head final with Steve Olliges, but two loose lug nuts would give them a 10 second penalty, and with that the win would go to Las Vegas' own, Steve Olliges.

* MINT 400 FOUNDER NORM JOHNSON JOINS LIVE MINT 400!*

“Mr. MINT 400,” Las Vegas’ own, Norm Johnson, has joined the LIVE! MINT 400 Team, to provide the “Best Online Coverage,” ever provided for the Historic MINT 400 Desert Off-Road Race, direct from The Entertainment Capital of the World, Las Vegas, Nevada! All on line in the comfort of your home at www.LIVEMINT400.COM.

Johnson created the Mint 400 in 1967, and continued as a consultant through 1972, when he left the employ of the Del Webb Corporation, to pursue other venues.  Norm, however, continued to compete in the Mint 400 and all the major off-road racing events as a driver though the end of the 1982 season. Johnson was a consistent finisher, placing third in the 1975 Mint 400, driving a class 7 Toyota, and third in the 1976 Baja 1000, driving a class 9 single seat buggy.   He also wrote the first book on the “History of Off-Road Racing,” in 1976, which is still the most complete book on all forms of off-road racing. In 2012 he was asked to join the new owners of the famous race, the Martelli Brothers, as a consultant. Norm resigned his duties as a consultant for the race in 2015.

Coverage of the “Great American Off-Road Race,” will begin on Saturday, March 14 at www.livemint400.com . It will air beginning at 6:00 a.m. PDT, when green flag drops for the limited vehicle race, to the last vehicle receiving the checkered flag at approximately 9:00 p.m., within the given time frame of the un-limited class, which gets underway at 1:00 p.m.  “Off-Road Live!” is celebrating its seventh year of exclusive coverage of the famous race, and provides up to the minute tracking of all the exciting race cars and its drivers.  You'll be able to feel the heart-pounding action of desert off-road racing, and know every move and turn of your favorite drivers throughout this year’s Mint 400, from the comfort of your own home.

Monday, March 9th, anyone from around the globe can experience the “Live Mint 400” broadcast by simply logging onto www.livemint400.com.  Viewers will get the entire story of Desert Off-Road racing!

The Webcast will feature Streaming Videos, Vehicle Tracking and Replays as well as live unofficial results. Fanatics and casual users alike will also have access to a photo/video gallery, and interviews! Follow your favorite race cars and the drivers as they conquer the grueling race course during this year’s event.  Hear the roar of the engines as they leave the starting line and head for the open desert race course. You will catch the passion of off-road racing, and your experience will feature tracking information that will show the actual location of all vehicles equipped with sophisticated tracking systems. The information on each vehicle will update at two-minute intervals throughout the race.

*The Insider Story of Roger Norman/The ReStart of HDRA/Normans Attempt to Buy The MINT 400 Name & Race in 2011!*

In 2010, Roger Norman, the racer, won the 25th version of the MINT. In 2011, Roger Norman, the businessman, began 'influencing' board members of SNORE. SNORE was the rightful owner the name MINT 400 in 2011.

Some legal opinions claim SNORE may today, still be the rightful owner, considering the conditions of the sale!

'Influencing', because one report of active SNORE Treasurer Ken Flippin requesting a six-figure income of Roger Norman, has been confirmed. As many as seven board members were reportedly 'influenced'.

After the 2011 race, one board member claimed the purchase of HDRA and Ken Flippin directed the SNORE board to sell the name "MINT 400". The name sold at a far below market price, under conditions that today are considered a violation of non-profit association rules or 'insider trading'.

[Notice: After extensive interviews with the ownership of VORRA at the time, this reporter found Roger Norman copied the 'blueprint' of VORRA's USA 500 and attempted a big Reno off-road race. Even with copious 'corporate welfare', help from the Reno Tourism Authority, Normans SCORE/HDRA Reno events failed.]

[Notice: On two separate occasions, over five years, this reporter asked Roger Norman about the MINT 400. Both were declined]
