Firefighter in intensive care after ATV wreck during Parker Race

An area firefighter’s condition has slightly improved in a Phoenix hospital after wrecking his ATV during the local Parker race last weekend.
Steven Parkerson, who works at Quartzsite Fire Department and McMullen Valley Fire Department, has been racing since he was a child, according to his coworker and childhood friend Samantha Hess.
“He’s been doing this for a very, very long time,” Samantha told OFF-ROAD LIVE! “He grew up in Salome and still lives there.”
Steven was wearing all the protective gear, but was thrown off his quad during last weekend’s race and suffered a traumatic brain injury. He was airlifted from Parker to ICU at West Valley Hospital in Phoenix, where doctors said at first that they didn’t expect him to survive.
“Since then his chances have improved dramatically,” Samantha said. “It’s a waiting game now. He’s on a ventilator, and breathing on his own too, so it’s been 50/50. They’re keeping him sedated most of the time but when he does wake up he’s able to move both arms and both legs, and open his right eye. He’s been having his ups and downs, good days and bad days, over the past week.”
Samantha described Steven as “amazing” and said lots of people had been very concerned and the community had shown its support for him. An online fundraiser has raised over $5700 at time of writing toward Steven’s expenses.
The brief reads in part: “Steven is a loving son, brother, friend, boyfriend, and step father of two beautiful children.”
Best In The Desert is being charged with fraud by Jordon Poole, after last years MINT 400 disaster. Accidents are common in off-road racing in Arizona.

Translation, the Skilton's and JeepSpeed sanctioners, knew the previous Parker events were unsafe. 

They wanted the money more than safety.

A new season of Best In The Desert is upon us and today here in Parker Arizona 62 unlimited vehicles put down their fastest lap to try and start first on race day. Coming off racing an Arctic Cat at King of the Hammers the day before, Robby Gordon hopped in his Trick Truck and laid quickest lap with a time of 4 minutes and 24 seconds, averaging 74mph over the 5 mile qualifying loop.

 Apdaly Lopez was only two seconds behind with Rob MacCachren, was only 1 second away from Lalo. Rounding out your top five were Sam Berri who was quickest Class 1500 car and Shawn Croll in the #32 truck.

 BITD changed the format of the race because the MINT 400 vendor doesnt have enough trackers for this race or the Mint 400 is with having limited classes race in the morning, and the unlimited in the afternoon. That means more clean air for the leader since it will take longer to get to lapped traffic, though it means the second race will get a rougher course then years past. Only time will tell to see who comes out on top at the finish line.

February 4 UPDATE: Parker Area Beaver Hunt Causes Uproar!

An annual beaver hunting contest in La Paz County came under fire after an animal rights group claimed hunters would kill beavers in La Paz County, Arizona.

The hunt was organized as a fundraiser, but following statewide backlash, parts of the event were changed. 

 "You can't hunt deer, turkey or anything else this time of year as far as hunting goes, beavers are the only thing you can hunt," said Andy McMillin.
McMillin is an avid hunter; he said the annual beaver hunt in Parker is a way to help the rabbit population.

 "Doing little gatherings like this is a good way to take down predator numbers and try to take the heat off the bunnies a little bit," McMillin said.

The event came under fire earlier this week after the flyer for the event said money would be given to people who shot the largest or the most beavers throughout the day.

 Casey Folks is the executive director of the group. He added just because beaver hunting is legal, doesn't mean it's right.

 "I'm pleased to hear the contest didn't go as planned, and as far as fundraising goes, I think there are lot of other ways that people can raise funds," Folks said. 

 According to the Arizona Department of Natural Resources, beaver hunting can take place all year. There are lots of beavers in Parker Arizona.

 The ANR said it doesn't track the number of the little furry beavers killed. "They're a very prolific animal, they're very adaptable animal, so the only way to control their population is hunting," said Hermin Bolz, a warden supervisor.

The obvious legal and safety issues prevent the hamlet of Parker Arizona from allowing drag racing down main street 2 at a time side by side."

Imagine, Robby Gordon and Pete Sohren, side-by-side, racing in downtown hickville. Thankfully it won't happen, because with Robby's anger issues and Pete's eyesight, they'll end up in a hair pulling bitch-fest! 

Then, not just being banned at the casino, they'll be banned from the entire county!
