STAGE 8; SAN JUAN DE MARCONA TO PISCO

AMERICAN BULLETIN! The Monster Energy Honda Rally Team has suffered another blow to their efforts to claim the Dakar Rally crown with a mechanical failure which has taken the rally leader, Ricky Brabec, out of the eighth stage of the 2019 event.Luck plays a cruel role in motorsport and surely Brabec must be wondering what he has to do. Indeed he had looked like being Honda’s best hope for victory and clearly proved he has what it takes as a rider. That’s two years on the bounce his Rally Team HRC race bike has blown an engine late into the rally after he fell to the same fate on stage 10 in 2018.The blown engine occurred on today's stage eight of the Dakar, just 56km into the 360km special. This leaves two of the five rider Honda team in the 2019 Dakar Rally after Joan Barreda went out early after getting stuck and Paulo Goncalves had a big accident during the fifth stage.

STAGE 7; BIG SAN JUAN DE MARCONA LOOP EVENT

Stephane Peterhansel was left seeing stars after a nasty landing early in the seventh stage of the 2019 Dakar Rally. The Mini driver made decent headway on leader Nasser Al-Attiyah by winning today's stage, as he moved back into second outright thanks to problems for Sebastian Loeb. However it wasn't a painless day for the 13-time Dakar winner, a nasty landing off a dune early in the stage leaving he and co-driver David Castera rattled. Peterhansel later confirmed to the official Dakar website that he suffered "a bad case of whiplash", and elaborated on the scare to media on the ground. "Not a perfect day," he said.

"At the beginning we jumped a dune, it was a big step. We landed on the front and destroyed the bonnet and a little bit our necks as well. "I saw some stars in my eyes after the big impact. Stage 7 Notes: Sunderland fastest, Brabec leads againStars aside, Peterhansel said he was happy enough to end the stage more than four minutes faster than Mini teammate Nani Roma. But he still reckons running down the 25 minutes needed to overhaul Al-Attiyah will be a stretch, despite a 15-minute swing over today's stage alone."

Navigating was tricky, but I think we did well because we gained time on everyone," he said."We got a bit closer to Nasser, but it'll be very hard to wrest the lead from him."Actually, we don't deserve to be ahead of him because he's doing really well and has made no mistakes so far."Peterhansel has twice lost 20 minutes plus through mistakes on this Dakar, first with a self-confessed "rookie error" early on, followed by a costly attempt to recover Roma during Stage 6.

Today's Stage: A sandy loop today. After a gruelling return to racing after the rest day that took them from Arequipa to San Juan de Marcona, the competitors are tackling the first loop stage of this year's Dakar. The 323 km special around San Juan de Marcona will put the competitors through the wringer.

STAGE 6; AREQUIPA TO SAN JUAN DE MARCONA

STAGE RESULTS! Sébastien Loeb makes it two in a row! Sébastien again demonstrated his raw speed in the Dakar and his ability to turn unfavourable terrain to his advantage with his third stage win this year, the second in a row. Nasser Al-Attiyah, however, still leads by a wide margin after finishing second today, 2'17' down.

Stage 6 Review: On completion of the first 5 stages that have brought the riders, drivers and crews to Arequipa, there are still 247 vehicles left in the race on the 41st edition of the Dakar (105 bikes, 18 quads, 93 cars, including 24 SxS, and 32 trucks), which is the lowest number of participants left at the mid-way point since 2007 (74%). For the survivors of this demanding route, the bikers have been dominated by young American Ricky Brabec, who is holding the hopes of Honda to bring the domination of KTM on the event to a close. In the car race, on the contrary a trio of experienced drivers, made up of Nasser Al Attiyah, Stéphane Peterhansel and Nani Roma, stand out from the rest, among which can be found Sébastian Loeb, who has won two stages. The stage on which the rally resumes, between Arequipa and San Juan de Marcona, promises to be the theatre of a formidable battle, with the major test of the Tanaka dunes at the beginning. The way back to Lima holds in store another festival of sand.

Today's liaison is the longest for this event due to the fact they have to drive longer distances between bivouacs (rally camps). There are longer amounts of highway driving in Peru,  which increases the individual drive durations.

The second half of the rally is under way! The  debut of the half marathon is the new rule. It is a second chance for the 30-odd car, S×S and truck crews that who had to withdraw from the

race during the first five stages and want to get back into the race in a different classification. Things are not getting any easier. On the contrary, at 800 km, today's special is the longest of the Dakar Peru 2019!

DAKAR NEWS UPDATES

SangYong DAKAR 2019 with Óscar Fuertes and Diego Vallejo in the New Rextron DKR

CLICK HERE FOR LIVE! STAGE 2 REPORT

After the success achieved in the Dakar 2018, in which Óscar Fuertes and Diego Vallejo took second place among the debutants, SsangYong has presented its most powerful argument to face the second consecutive participation in the toughest and most demanding rally in the world : the Rexton DKR, with which Óscar Fuertes and Diego de Vallejo will have the objective of returning to reach the goal.

Ten years after the first edition held in South America, this 2019 Dakar will be played from January 6 to 17, 2019 exclusively by Peruvian lands, with a loop that will start and end in Lima. Throughout the ten foreseen stages, the participants will have to cover a total of about 5,000 kilometers, of which 70% will pass through sand and dunes, including 3,000 km. of timed sections and, being a loop, only 2,000 kms. of links that will not be exempt from difficulties and challenge.

SsangYong, a SUV and 4x4 specialist since 1954 and the oldest car manufacturer in Korea, has a new car that has been completely developed by SsangYong Motorsport in Spain for this challenge: the new Rexton DKR, which elegantly fuses the buggy concept with the Muscular design features of the flagship of the Korean firm worldwide. The aim for the 2019 edition was to reinforce the reliability of the car in the elements subject to greater fatigue during this year's Dakar, and build a more reliable, faster and lighter car.

As a novelty for this year, the team has also registered a 6x6 truck that will run the race and will assist Oscar and Diego if necessary, as well as a standard Rexton and a motorhome, with the aim of improving assistance and providing the necessary technical support in such a long and difficult test.

As in the Dakar 2018, the format chosen for the Rexton DKR is that of Buggy with traction to the rear wheels, this being the type of vehicle that best adapts to the route proposed by the organization. The spectacular racing car competes in the category T1.3 that groups the two-wheel drive vehicles with gasoline engines, and employs a powerful V8 racing engine. Round the 1,900 kg. of weight in running order, and is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just 4.4 seconds, reaching a maximum speed of 195 km / h.

The body, inspired by the image of the new Rexton, is lighter, offers a greater angle of attack, and has a smaller front surface, improving aerodynamics. In addition, the final weight of the set has been significantly reduced compared to the DKR Tívoli used in the 2018 edition. The multitubular chassis used is made of Chromium-Molybdenum and welded with TIG technology, it has an integrated cage, and this year it has been reinforced with a new section in the most vital parts to provide maximum strength and torsional rigidity.

As in last year's car, the V8 gasoline engine of the Rexton DKR is located in longitudinal center position to achieve a better weight distribution. However, a series of modifications have been introduced that allow a significant increase in power from 405 to 450 hp, thanks to the use of a new MoTeC programmable control unit with real-time map changes, which allows as a novelty more noticeable, dispensing with complete of fuses and relays, with the consequent saving of weight and reduction of possibilities of breakdown.

The final result is a new Rexton DKR more powerful and at the same time, more efficient, which has allowed the use of new Pyrotect fuel tanks of lower capacity, which together with other lighter mechanical elements, have allowed to reduce significantly the final weight of the set .

The transmission, also completely new, is a Sadev SL90-23 6-speed gearbox with manual-sequential operation and cut-off system , straight teeth and crabot synchronization. It uses a new tridisk AP ceramic clutch that supports up to 1,500 Nm of torque, and a new Torsen type self-locking differential with a higher blocking percentage in both acceleration and retention.

The tires are the Yokohama Geolandar M / T G003 37X12.50R17 that gave such a good result in the last edition, thanks to its excellent durability, traction capacity and absorption in the most difficult terrain. They are mounted on new 17x7 Raceline alloy wheels with "Beadlock" that allow the pressure of the wheels to be lowered more easily to overcome the dunes through the self-inflating system operated by the co-pilot from the cockpit .

For the shock absorbers, the Rexton DKR still has a double King brand system with helical spring and extension compensator, together with adjustable telescopic dampers in two compression parameters and one extension, whose tuning has been conveniently adapted to the characteristics of the new car after the excellent performance offered during the 2018 edition. In the brake section, the Rexton has 30% more friction surface, also improving the heat dissipation with respect to the DKR Tívoli, which translates into greater resistance to fatigue.

After the success of last year, the 44-year-old Madrid driver will be in charge of driving the SsangYong Rexton DKR accompanied in the right seat once again by the Galician Diego Vallejo. Fuertes is one of the most complete pilots and a reference in motorsports in Spain, counting on his extensive track record with a Championship of Spain Rally Earth (2011 absolute category) to which we must add 5 titles of the Mitsubishi Evo Cup After moving from rallies to raids, and always at the controls of a SsangYong, he won a Spanish Rally TT Championship (2015, 2-wheel drive) , also achieving the first international triumph of SsangYong that same season. with the victory in Baja Aragón in category 2 driving wheels. In this same discipline, Óscar obtained an absolute subchampionship in 2017 at the controls of the Tivoli Rally Raid 4WD, after being the leader of the championship during a great part of the season, being the peak moment of it the victory in the European Dakar Challenge, which allowed his inscription in the Dakar 2018. Fuertes has played more than 150 rallies during his 26 years in competition.

For his part, Diego Vallejo, born in Lugo in 1973, is one of the most successful co-drivers of Spain. In the palmarés of Diego stand out his three titles of Champion of Spain of Rallies (two championships of asphalt rallies in 2009 and 2014, and one of All Terrain in 2016) and more than 385 rallies to his back after 29 years of dedication to the copilotage . For the famous Galician co-driver this will be his fourth Dakar as co-driver and, without a doubt, his experience and professionalism will be one of the most important assets for the SsangYong Motorsport team. Not in vain, Diego can boast of having crossed the goal of the Dakar in his three previous participations.

The Dakar is always a challenge of the first magnitude, both for the drivers and co-drivers and for the teams and the vehicles; a challenge that requires participants to give their best on a physical, mental, sports and mechanical level. That's why Óscar, Diego and the entire SsangYong Motorsport team have been preparing this special event practically since they finished last year. " In our second participation in the Dakar, we will come back with the main objective of reaching the finish, improving if possible our position in the general classification, paying special attention to the stages that run through the dunes, but always with the idea of reach the goal among the best in our category. We are convinced that the experience accumulated in the Dakar and our new Rexton DKR can serve us to perform at a great level, and this is an unbeatable opportunity to prove it ", commented Óscar Fuertes.

REPSOL RETURNS TO DAKAR PERU 2019

Dakar Isidre Esteve and Repsol Rally Team comeback to Dakar 2019 Isidre Esteve and Txema Villalobos will face the Southamerican challenge again with Repsol Rally Team. The objective is to improve their 21st position from last January.

PERU 2019 DAKAR; Spain's Laia Sanz Pre-Race

The Calvary of Laia Sanz will participate in the Dakar 2019. The Spanish pilot of KTM has suffered a double viral and bacterial infection that prevented her from training normally until the beginning of December.

Laia Sanz now smiles and in her eyes the dye of the illusion that the Dakar wakes up every year at this time is again visible. But since she retired in the second stage of the Inca Challenge (September 15) the last three months have been a real ordeal for the Catalan. Sanz, an official moto-rider of the KTM team, who has won 17 times in the Dakar, returned to train on the bike in early December, when he came to consider not running what will be his 9th consecutive Dakar. "November was the worst month of the three, because I was cured already, but I could not train for the aftermath and you see everyone else on the bike and you go against the clock", acknowledged the pilot on Tuesday in Barcelona, where she presented her new decoration with Soficat Xerox at the head.

"It's been a few super-hard months, but in the last few days I've been feeling well again and feeling like a sportsman again. I am not in the conditions that I would like to be in order to face a race like the Dakar, which demands 200%, but I am metallic (iron-steel?) that I will suffer a lot ". Sanz contracted an infectious mononucleosis caused by the Epstein-Barr virus last spring, after his 14th place in a crowded Merzouga Rally.

In August, she contracted Q fever, caused by a bacterium called Coixella Burnetti, which caused an uncomfortable neuropathy for which he had vision problems and tingling in her arms until a few weeks ago. All this meant that he had to be "from the bed to the sofa and from the sofa to the bed", during the months of September and October, losing the key part of the preparation for the Dakar. "For me it is already a success to be on the starting line".

"From there, I'll try to do my best, but we'll have to see how the race progresses. I can not be as ambitious as in the past. It is still unknown how I will find myself in Peru ", warns Sanz, who was above all prudent about the expectations for the 41st edition of the raid. "Last year I was in a great state of form, after spending many hours on the bike, perhaps in my best form ever. On the other hand, this year is the opposite. If it's a Dakar navigation, it's good for me, but I'm better off with a longer race, not so much as a sprint.

"The Catalan rider, who finished 9th in the Dakar 2015, marking a milestone in the competition, has managed to overcome two diseases that punished her harshly. Now, the illusion returns to her after months of apathy and suffering. The objectives can not be those of 11 months ago at last years DAKAR event, when she reached 14th overall. The dunes of Peru still have surprises.

Mitsubishi Returns to DAKAR 2019, Peru

The Eclipse Cross T1 Prototype will be driven by Spaniards Cristina Gutierrez and Pablo Huete in the gruelling 5,000km, 10-stage event that takes place next January. Gutierrez and Huete have raced (and finished) the Dakar before, but this is the Eclipse’s first outing. It uses a steel spaceframe chassis clad with carbon body panels, serious suspension with two Öhlins Racing dampers per corner and permanent all-wheel drive with locking centre, front and rear differentials. The brakes are AP Racing, and power comes from a 340bhp, 506lb ft turbo-diesel running through a six-speed sequential gearbox.

PERU 2019 DAKAR; The True Desert Event!

The 2018 Dakar Champion, 'El Matador', Carlos Sainz, will start his 12th DAKAR event on January 7. The two-time world rally champion and two-time winner of the Dakar is convinced that, even if the race will be shorter than previous editions, it will not be easier.

"I expect an intense and complicated Dakar, even if it is more complicated. The percentage of dunes is close to 100%, so for a special of 300 kilometers of sand it will take five hours, with a trap in every corner"

"Conditions are enormous and we need to be very focused to avoid accidents, every day, you can not rest assured until you have crossed the finish line, even if you arrive at the last day with a 20-minute advantage, because there can be many surprises"

What happened to the 2018 results?

Dakar Rally leader Carlos Sainz has had his 10-minute penalty rescinded, after Peugeot presented new evidence regarding his earlier run-in with quad bike rider Kees Koolen.Koolen had lodged a complaint to Dakar in the aftermath of the La Paz - Uyuni stage, alleging that he was hit by the Peugeot and that Sainz did not stop to assist him following the contact. The two-time World Rally champion was subsequently handed a 10-minute penalty for "potentially dangerous" conduct, but the sanction appeased neither side - with Sainz saying the penalty left him "disgusted", and Koolen feeling it was not severe enough and threatening criminal action. Peugeot called the decision "incomprehensible" and vowed to appeal, and on Tuesday night provided the Dakar stewards with telemetry from Sainz's 3008DKR Maxi and other relevant information. This prompted the cancellation of the penalty and the issuing of "a formal advice to crew #303 [Sainz and co-driver Lucas Cruz] to take extra care while overtaking other competitors"."The telemetry does not show any crashes," said Peugeot Sport boss Bruno Famin. "Maybe a brush, but nothing like an impact. The accelerometer didn't register it, just as Carlos hadn't. In the telemetry you can see Carlos follows the quad during 12 seconds at 50km/h and when the quad loses control, he brakes again to 37km/h. "It is clear that Carlos braked hard and turned the steering wheel sharply to avoid the quad. "I've read some statements from the quad rider. I think Carlos' behaviour in this incident was perfect and the quad rider should thank Carlos for having avoided him. These are the facts. "It's a matter of common sense. We are very happy that the stewards analysed the facts and looked at the dossier again to reconsider their decision."We are happy that they cancelled the penalty, since two days ago they didn't have all the data to make the decision.

DAKAR 2019 SORTING OUT TO GOLF CART WARS!!!

*AMERICAN ROBBY GORDON TEAM BRINGING THREE VEHICLES TO DAKAR
UPDATED! January 18, 2018:

EXCLUSIVE REPORTING>>>

Robby Gordon was quoted as stating, "Cole Potts quit on the team"
Everyone else kept pushing to the finish.

This was said on the NBCSN Coverage of Stage 9.

UPDATE January 16: "There hasn’t been a XX do well at a BITD or SCORE race yet. Max Gordon raced last weekend at the BITD Parker golf cart race and didn’t make it half a lap. The XX has serious weaknesses between the flywheel and the wheel hubs? By "already know" I mean before the Dakar ever started." Quote by Austin Farner.

At the Stage 8 part of this years DAKAR event Robby Gordon is not part of the official rally. He's listed as 36 hours behind the 'marathon' field. Sounds like a free-ride for cheaters.

The Textron uses the Yamaha YXZ engine with a slightly different head on it. We have been running low boost Turbo's on those YXZ motors with no issues for years - 6PSI with stock internals pretty much doubles the HP to the rear wheels, and does it reliably. Any more boost than that on any YXZ pre-2019, and we suggest stronger internals as well, but we are also very conservative when it comes to that stuff. The 2019 YXZ has stronger rods, it seems that Yamaha is making that motor a bit more accepting of turbo kits without having to break the seal. GYTR now has a turbo kit for it, and I believe they have been selling that motor in the Viper snowmobiles already turbo'd from the factory as well for quite some time. Can Am seems to be dominating just about everything they are racing in these days.....not surprising to see them doing so well in the Dakar. The wheelbase is a nice advantage - even in the two-seater, when it comes to screaming across the desert and the dunes. And yes, factory support is great to have - so is excellent prep and planning.

January 6 UPDATE: Robby Gordon is giving himself one heck of a 50th birthday present: he’s returning to compete in the 2019 Dakar Rally after a two-year hiatus. Gordon, who turns 50 on January 2, just four days before the Rally kicks off its 10-stage/11-day run in Peru from Jan. 6-17, will field three golf-carts in one of the most grueling race events in the world. “The Dakar Rally is excited to welcome back Robby Gordon, the most famous American competitor in its history,” said Rally director Xavier Gavory. “An absolute legend of the Dakar for his aggressive driving style and showmanship, Gordon and Team Speed will be one of the teams to keep an eye on in the 2019 edition.”

Some notes on the SPEED DAKAR-GORDON issue: "T3P12 SPEED LIMIT Any Pro UTV and Pro UTV Forced Induction vehicle in conformity to the Score Regulation, will have a limited speed of 130km/h, having a tolerance of up to 135km/h maximum during a maximum time of one minute per hour."

The sup regs are the 'rules' of the Dakar, and they were published in October. Any changes after they are published will be in a bulletin, not amended in the original document. The metadata of the doc supports this as it's last modification is dated 19th of October. So the rule's been there since the rules were published. Considering the timeline - the regs are published well after the org opened applications to enter - perhaps Robby devised the plan based on the news that ASO was opening up entries to SCORE PRO UTV class vehicles, and that he anticipated that the rules wouldn't include a speed limit (as I don't think they speed limit them in SCORE events). On the other side of the Atlantic the ASO guys may have always expected to implement the same speed limit on the UTVs as they do for the other SxSs. I'd say this is very likely seeing that they also gave the SCORE UTVs the same allowance to make multiple fuel stops during the stages, like the rest of the SxSs. It's unlikely you'd apply one rule (that gives an advantage compared with the T1 cars) and not apply another (that applies a disadvantage as compared to the T1 cars). In the end, the entries closed in November, after the regs were published. If Robby didn't like the regs when they were published he could have pulled his entry. In my mind, he anticipated a gap in the regs opening, and went for it. The gap didn't open, so he's racing on a rule set that has parity with other UTVs.

While this year’s UTV entry list for the longest off-road race in the world is strong, with the 34 entries more than tripling the amount in last year’s event, Gordon won’t be competing in the designated Side-by-Side class. Instead, he’ll be competing in the general classification for cars, running three Textron Off-Road Wildcat XXs for himself, Cole Potts, and Blade Hildebrand under the new UTV Open rules.“The UTV is the future of all-terrain,” Gordon said coming into the event. “The market has completely changed. We should be contenders for stage wins and the general classification. For sure, I don’t know where we are situated against Toyota, Mini and Peugeot. It is a great opportunity just to be able to participate, but the goal is still to win.“I have been in this business for quite a while, and I can tell you we have a very competitive car, especially on a rally route like the one we will take on Peru. Then, it will come down to everyone’s experience, and we will have to have some luck on our side.”

This year’s Rally will be significantly different than past editions. It’s been shortened from three-plus weeks and nearly 20 stages to just under two weeks and 10 stages. For the first time in Rally history, the entire course will be held in one country. “100 percent Peru, 100 percent Dakar,” Gavory said. Since competing in his first Dakar Rally in 2005, Gordon has achieved 17 stage wins and five top-15 overall finishes, including a third-place finish in 2009. His last start was in the 2016 Rally. He is the first American in Rally history to not only earn a stage win, but also the first to earn an overall podium finish.

Gordon will be reunited with navigator Kellon Walch, who has called the route for Gordon in four previous Rally’s. “I fully intend to come to Peru to compete for the overall, and there is no better person to have in the right seat than Kellon,” Gordon said in a media release. “The in-car communication and mechanical skills between the both of us over the years allows me to have the trust to concentrate on driving.” Gordon and Team Speed will compete in Textron XX entries that will be sponsored by Toyo Tires, King Off-Road Racing Shocks and Gordon’s own SPEED Energy Drink. Gordon will compete in his 13th Dakar Rally, joined by first-time Rally competitors Blade Hildebrand and Cole Potts. Hildebrand, who is coming off his first season in Gordon’s Stadium SUPER Trucks series. “This is a race I’ve followed all my life, and to represent Team SPEED and the USA at the international level, competing against the world’s best off-road racers in the most grueling race known to man – what an honor,” Hildebrand said. Potts, who also drives in Gordon’s Stadium SUPER Trucks series, will have veteran motorcycle racer Max Eddy as his navigator. “The opportunity to compete in the Dakar in Peru is an exciting opportunity,” Pitts said. “We are going to be able to tackle some of the world’s toughest sand dunes and witness some beautiful terrain.” This year’s Dakar Rally, the 41st edition in its storied history, begins January 6 in Lima, Peru, and returns to Lima for its conclusion on January 17. The total distance of the 10-stage event (plus one rest day) will be 2,954 kilometers (1,836 miles).

OFF-ROAD LIVE! REPORTING:

*EXCLUSIVE OUTLOOK: Top Speed for the entire event, 130km/hr (80.6 mph). "Any Pro UTV and Pro UTV Forced Induction Vehicle in conformity (with) the 'SCORE' Regulation, will have a limited speed of 130 km/hr having a tolerance of up to 135 km/hr maximum time of one minute per hour". Reference regulation number "T3P12 Speed Limit".

Fuel and logistics are different for the many contestant 'classes'.

Robby Gordon is competing in the "car class". Other SxS competitors are loaded into the bike class. As for the bikes, extra gas stops that Robby has to have a mandatory stop time of 15 minutes. The gas may be pumped from drums (as is common for these extra remote gas stops for bikes), so there won't be any kind of quick-fill, and none of his crew will be there either. Either way, any car class competitors recently passed will get back past him at those stops.

The 'mandatory' 15 minute stop, many cars may pass them. This all seems like a tricky situation that could turn into a major disadvantage. Then again, they may have time to cool the belts and do some quick simple repairs while off the clock. Plus, they get to see who's "behind" them when they pass by and better gauge their overall position.

SxS's & Pro UTV's are allowed to carry a max of 130 liters of fuel which won't be enough for several stages. They'll use the same fueling stations as the motorcycles & quads. The Gordon buggies will also be using the motorcycle gas stop fifteen minute neutralization, but off the clock. Since they are competing in the car class the fifteen minutes will be deducted from their daily time. Being passed by a few cars really shouldn't be much of a disadvantage in the dunes. A lighter load and a few minutes to review things may be worth it.

*Specific Fuel Considerations

-Dakar regulations: 2) Fuel Range; All Vehicles must have a minimum range of 800 km, with the exception of SxS (UTV) Group (Article 9P2-5), UTV SCORE Regulations and UTV ASN Regulations (Article 9P2-6) and MITJET-type vehicles (9P2-1) which shall have a minimum range of 250 km and EV Challenge vehicles (Article 9P2-6). Refueling: 3) Refueling; a) The supply of fuel only is authorized, under penalty of Disqualification:▪ at commercial service stations in the Leg towns or on the Road Sections;▪ via distributors approved by the Organizers (list available upon request) at the Bivouac in the area provided for this purpose;▪ at the Organiser’s distribution points (Bike refueling for SxS Vehicles, UTV Score Regulations, UTV Open ASN Regulations, MITJET and any other points for the EV Challenge Vehicles). The SxS class has a 130 liter max capacity (from 1 or 2 tanks).

-SxS's & Pro UTV's are allowed to carry a max of 130 liters which won't be enough for several stages. They'll use the same fueling stations as the motorcycles & quads. The Gordon buggies will also be using the motorcycle gas stop fifteen minute neutralization, but off the clock. Since they are competing in the car class the fifteen minutes will be deducted from their daily time.Being passed by a few cars really shouldn't be much of a disadvantage in the dunes. A lighter load and a few minutes to review things may be worth it.

*TIRE (Tyre) CONSIDERATIONS

-T3P5 TYRES’ SIZE Tyres must respect the following sizes:▪ 940 mm max, for 2-wheel drive Group OP.1 Vehicles and for Group OP.2 Vehicles.▪ 810 mm max, for 4-wheel drive Group OP.1 Vehicles, on 15 inch rims.▪ 33 inches max, for the Score Pro UTV Forced Induction Vehicles Group OP.1▪ Or in conformity to the article 285.8, appendix J FIA and article 10P of the Supplementary Regulations.

*EXCLUSIVE REPORT: as to what car Gordon will drive seeing as he claims he's in the event for the overall win. The Textron XX has been entered as part of the 'Open' Car category or 'class' as it complies with the regulations imposed by Mexican off-road racing faux sanction, "SCORE".

"Classe : A_OP.1 : OP.1 - Tous véhicules conformes au Règlement Score (all vehicles conforming to SCORE regs)."

More SCORE BS? under the Score Pro UTV FI rules (OP.1). It seems that the rules contradict themselves. If he is in OP.1, he can't run a turbo petrol. “UTV forced induction class”...There is no such thing as a non petrol forced induction UTV... at least racing SCORE.

"UTV Open: a new class for cars. The car category is accepting new light vehicles, that have notably been seen on the American Baja route and will now be trying their luck in the Dakar race." The UTV Open vehicles meet different technical standards to the SxS vehicles, although they are of similar size. SxS vehicles, a different category altogether, where the vehicles will have a purple plate, have made spectacular progress for 2019 and will include new big names such as Ignacio Casale (CHL), Francisco "Chaleco" Lopez and Casey Currie (USA).

*Bill Conger replaces Street on the 2019 team.

*Jonah Street off the team! Reporting suggests this was with rancor, FOLLOWING>>>

*Golf cart Chassis 1, ready to race, is headed to Miami with a container full of spares to be shipped.

Chassis 2 & 3 (not race ready) will be flown to Peru after Christmas. Support rigs are already on the transport ship.

*Robby's entry in the 2018 SCORE Baja 1000 wasn't legal for the Pro UTV 2900 forced induction class since the car is (was) a one off and isn't in production, per the rules. Lots of heartburn from racers before the start. He whined and used his 'Robby' ticket' and 'SCORE' let him race.

Then he DNF'd. Robby and his team, Did Not Finish the Baja 1000 2018.

*Robby Gordon's teammates Blade Hildebrand and Cole Potts came out to a recent rally navigation school this past weekend to get some dunes and team training with navigators Max Eddy Jr and Kellon Walch. They had two Textron XX cars, though not the ones for Dakar since those are still under construction. Robby and Jonah couldn't fit the training into their schedules.

Blade and Cole couldn't get to the top of all the dunes the school sent them to on day 1, but Ricky Brabec on his factory Honda rally bike had to take 3 tries to get up some of them as well. So maybe the dunes of Peru will take their toll!

*Robby's Press Release: December 11: "Robby Gordon and Team SPEED will return to the 2019 Dakar Rally with three SPEED Edition Textron Off-Road XX’s and competing in the car category. Gordon will drive his familiar bright orange and black SPEED Energy/Toyo Tires/ SPEED Edition Textron XX entry. Blade Hildebrand and Cole Potts will field their own separate SPEED Edition Textron XX race vehicles.

Xavier Gavory, Director of the Dakar Rally, commented the following after learning of Gordon and Team SPEED’s return in 2019. Gavory said, “The Dakar Rally is excited to welcome back Robby Gordon the most famous American competitor in it’s history. An absolute legend of the Dakar for his aggressive driving style and showmanship, Gordon and Team SPEED will be one of the teams to keep an eye on in the 2019 edition, 100% Peru, 100% Dakar".

For the record, Gordon Motorsports DAKAR 2019 entries look like this: Nº. 316 Robby Gordon – Kellon Walch. Nº. 346 Cole Potts – Max Eddy. Nº. 367 Blade Hildebrand -- Jonah Street.

All three race vehicles will race on Toyo Open Country M/T tires, which will deliver the maximum Off-Road performance and durability needed to tackle the 10-Stage challenge; 3,107-miles (5,000 KM) through the extreme sands of Peru.

Gordon, a Dakar fan favorite, is no stranger to the event and will make his 13th start in the historic rally. Since his first Dakar Rally in 2005, Gordon’s vehicles have captured 17 stage wins & five top 15 overall finishes. Gordon became the first American in the history of the Dakar to capture a stage win and overall podium finish, even as a manufacture.

Joining Gordon in the cockpit of the SPEED Energy/Toyo Tires / SPEED Edition Textron XX will be his previous 4-time Dakar navigator and Dakar special winner, Kellon Walch. “Kellon has been my navigator for three out of my last four Dakar’s. I fully intend to come to Peru to compete for the overall, and there is no better person to have in the right seat than Kellon. The in-car communication and mechanical skills between the both of us over the years allows me to have the trust to concentrate on driving,” stated Gordon. For the first time since 2010, Team SPEED will enter two additional race-cars in the Rally with Stadium SUPER Trucks racers Blade Hildebrand and Cole Potts driving their own SPEED Edition Textron XX’s.

Hildebrand, whom spent 2018 in his first season behind the wheel of his Empire Destructive Stadium SUPER Truck, claimed eight top 5 finishes, while reaching the podium twice.“DAKAR, Yeah it’s that real! This is a race I’ve followed all my life, and to represent Team SPEED and the USA at the international level, competing against the worlds best off-road racers in the most grueling race known to man. What an absolute honor! To partner with King Shocks, Toyo Tires, and my mentor Robby Gordon, I have the right people on my side, and I am ready for the ultimate challenge.” Commented Hildebrand on the Dakar experience.

Jonah Street, a motorcycle veteran whom has competed in six prior editions of the Dakar (2006-2012), will navigate for his second Dakar, sitting along side of Hildebrand. “I think Blade is super talented, so getting to work with him in his first trip to Dakar is going to be awesome. Having navigated for Sheldon Creed back in 2016 gives me the prior experience to help get him up to 'SPEED' quickly!” (Get it?!) Street commented in regards to competing with Blade.

An excited Potts commented on the Dakar Rally.“Having this unique opportunity to participate in the 2019 Dakar Rally". Having raced North America’s toughest off road races already, I’m very interested to see how Dakar compares to them. With the opportunity to compete in the Dakar in the country of Peru is an exciting opportunity. As we are going to be able to tackle some of the world’s toughest sand dunes and witness some beautiful terrain.”

Max Eddy, a veteran motorcycle racer, has claimed victory in the Baja 1000 and Vegas to Reno, will navigate for Potts, providing the driver with extensive course detail and direction. “Cole has proved to be an excellent competitor this year in the Stadium SUPER Trucks series as well as in the desert with the Trophy Truck. I am confident Cole will be able to adjust to the XX, and course conditions easily to get a respectable finish in each Stage.” Stated Eddy.

Beginning on January 6th in Lima, Peru, competitors will gather in front of more than a hundred thousand fans on the worlds stage for the traditional Dakar opening ceremonies. Each team in the rally is recognized prior to the start. Stage 1 will feature a short 84 km special with a 247 km liaison bringing the competitors from Lima to the Southeast along the Pacific coast to the port city of Pisco."

*REAL, SINCERE AND CONCRETE SAFETY WORK

December 11, 2018: Real, Sincere and Concrete Safety Work

"Safety measures taken by the organization:

*Road safety; Speed is permanently checked, and speeding is subject to penalties.
*All accredited drivers of vehicles (competitors or otherwise) in the Dakar must sign a charter of commitment to proper behavior before the start of the race.
*Respect for the driving regulations in force in the different countries is absolutely necessary.
*Data recorded by the GPS are analyzed for possible penalties.
*The police also carry out speed checks.
*A highly equipped medical service.
*The medical team is made up of 60 people.
*Up to 7 helicopters and 32 vehicles on the runway, 10 of which are medicalized.
*A field hospital equipped with the best emergency equipment.
*Helicopter transfer to hospitals in the host countries in a very short period of time."

*SAND, DUNES AND DESERT

December 10, 2018: "Sand, Dunes and Desert. This is what the Dakar riders and crews are in search of and the exclusively Peruvian menu that has been concocted for this coming January clearly corresponds to their expectations. In all, 334 vehicles will turn up for the start on January 7, all of whom share the goal of returning to the capital after 5,000 kilometres, including 3,000 of special stage that will be remembered for an unequaled intensity.

“It is a little like as if we were competing in the Vendée Globe only in the roaring 40s”, says race director Etienne Lavigne in defining the degree of difficulty of the 2019 edition. The skill level of dune crossing, the ability to navigate without detours in open terrain and the indispensable physical strength to battle in the massive sandy sectors will be the criteria to fulfil for the title contenders. In the motorcycle category, the indestructible KTMs of Walkner, Price and Sunderland will, once again, take on the Hondas of Benavides, Gonçalves and Barreda as well as the Yamahas of Van Beveren and De Soultrait.

In the car class, the former Peugeot stars have moved to Mini, where Sainz, Peterhansel and Despres will join Roma, Przygonski and Terranova, while Loeb will be in a privateer Peugeot entered by PH Sport. They will face stiff competition from the Toyotas of Al Attiyah, De Villiers and Ten Brinke, in the largest car field since 2015. In the truck division, the favorites from Kamaz should face their rivals from Team De Rooy, led by Gerard De Rooy, who returns after a one-year absence. Beyond the battle for three major titles, looking at the entry list reveals several tendencies that already make the 2019 edition standout. First, the number of rally newcomers totals 135 competitors, allowing 97 vehicles, (30% of the field) to compete for rookie of the year honours.

Second, the SxS category has properly taken off this year, with 30 entrants in all, and a battle that promises to be a tight one between former quad category winner Sergey Karyakin, retired bike rider Gerard Farrés (3rd in 2017).

And third, a female movement with the largest entry since the beginning of the Dakar’s South American era. They will be 17, including long-time competitor in the bike category Laia Sanz, but there will also be a few duos to keep an eye on such as Camelia Liparoti and Rosa Romero in the car category along with Annett Fischer and Andrea Peterhansel in SxS.

Half-marathon: the second chanceThe disappointments are sometimes cruel on the Dakar, especially in the case of a premature retirement after just a few hundred kilometres of action. This year, the cars, trucks and SxS that experience this hardship in the opening half of the rally will be able to re-join the rally following the rest day in a parallel competition. Competing in a separate classification, these vehicles will run with an orange plate and will never be permitted to start in the first 25 places of a special stage."

*THE SOJOURN BEGINS

November 23, 2018 France: "For the past ten years before each edition of the Dakar, a procession has been held leading to the port city of Le Havre. Coming from the four corners of Europe, several hundred vehicles are flocking to this first objective of joining the ships of passage where the boarding operations for the Trans-Atlantic crossing.

Nearly 270 race vehicles, in addition to those being prepared in America, are preparing to board the Heritage Leader, the ship that will have the mission to cross the Atlantic Ocean and then to navigate through the Panama Canal to deliver this precious cargo to the port of Lima, Peru at the end of December. Before heading to sea, its holds will also be filled with 79 cars and 163 assistance trucks, as well as 59 press cars and 30 organization vehicles.

Not to mention the human tenders, caring for the mechanical core of this event.

The balance of the people part of the rally, will fly from all parts of the globe, to this years challenge and goal, PERU!

Peru, South America, southern hemisphere and "The Richest Country in the World!".

OFF-ROAD LIVE! will take you on the Magic Carpet Ride on this years 2019 DAKAR! Our crew of reporters, photojournalists and Racing Crew will deliver over two months of Ride-Alongs via the The Road To DAKAR USA and the longest running LIVE! Coverage of the event, so STAY TUNED!

The Kamaz Trucks, together with their Belarusian road partners from the Maz team, they set up their first bivouac near the docks on Wednesday evening. But this year, they are sharing their encampment with voyagers from even further away. The Mongolian driver Byambatsogt Udiikhuu has shipped his Can-Am by an assistance truck that has already booked 12,000 kilometres and a 21-day journey, passing through Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine, Hungary, Poland, Germany and Belgium before finally arriving here in France!"

The Great country of Peru is our goal!

*CABO1000 Team Announced by South Cape Tourism Department

South Cape Tourism announced from Cape Town, Mexico, the  Sebastian Loeb Team with Harry Hunt and Pierre Lachaume in the teams with their 2008 Pug and 3008 Pug, are underway by maritime transport to Lima, Peru.

The 2019 DAKAR effort of PH Sport has already taken part in three Off-Road rallies in 2018 – the Dakar, the Dubai Baja and the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge – with Khalid Al-Qassimi (3008 DKR) and Harry Hunt (2008 DKR).

Nine-time World Rally Champion and recent Rally Catalunya winner Sébastien Loeb will sensationally return to the Dakar Rally 2019 as a privateer, backed by Red Bull. The 44-year-old Frenchman, who won his 79th WRC rally in Spain last weekend, will drive a Peugeot 3008DKR navigated by Daniel Elena. This is similar to the car with which he finished runner-up to team-mate Stéphane Peterhansel in 2017, missing out on the win by just five minutes. Loeb also convincingly led the Dakar early in the 2018 Dakar Rally, before being forced to retire due to an injury sustained by his co-driver after a heavy impact in the Peruvian dunes.

PSA Group ambassador Loeb – whose Peugeot will be run by independent French team PH Sport – is now bidding to become the first privateer to win the event since Jean-Louis Schlesser back in 2000. This year’s (2019) 41st Dakar Rally takes place in Peru from January 6-17, covering approximately 5,000 kilometres over 10 stages. As usual, just getting to the finish will be an achievement. “Throughout my career I’ve always been considered to be a favorite,” said Loeb.

“While I’m obviously motivated by winning, having fun is important too. So taking part in the 2019 Dakar with Daniel, as private outsiders, is a fantastic challenge. I’m ready to give it a go: a little bit like my three WRC appearances this year, where success was far from being guaranteed. Except this time, I’m in a private team, which obviously makes it more difficult. ”The Frenchman has taken part in the Dakar Rally three times previously, always in factory cars: finishing ninth on his first attempt in 2016 with the Peugeot 2008DKR, second in 2017 with the Peugeot 3008DKR, and retiring from the lead in 2018 with the Peugeot 3008DKR Maxi. Loeb also took part in the Silk Way Rally and Rallye du Maroc with Peugeot, adding to his Cross-Country experience.

Unlike his key rivals though, Loeb won’t get time for a test in competition before the 41st Dakar, and instead will test the PH car privately in December before heading to the rally start in Lima. He faces a fierce array of competitors, including his former team-mates Peterhansel and Carlos Sainz – who between them have racked up six Dakar wins in the last 10 years – alongside Cyril Despres, all of whom are driving MINI’s latest buggy. Former winners Nasser Al-Attiyah and Giniel de Villiers will also be at the forefront of the action for Toyota. “I think all these guys will be strong rivals,” added Loeb. “In the end, I couldn't go with the 3008DKR Maxi from this year due to the latest regulations, so we go with the 2.20 meter wide car from the year before, maybe with a few small evolutions on the engine similar to this year. Obviously, there are some newer cars out there too, so we really don’t know how competitive we will be. But there are many drivers with the chance to win, and hopefully we will be one of them.

”This year’s Dakar route takes place entirely within one country (Peru) for the first time, unprecedently with only 2000 kilometres of road section and around 70% of the route on sand dunes: territory where the 3008DKR has excelled in the past. It’s this ability that Loeb hopes to use to his advantage, complementing his track record of success at events that have ranged from rallying to Le Mans to touring cars.

“I like the dunes, but the key thing will be not to get stuck,” concluded Loeb. “This is what I will work on during my test and there will also be some work for Daniel too, as navigation in the dunes is really tricky. I only made the decision to go to Dakar again at the last minute, but I’m still hungry for the win. We’re probably lacking some preparation compared to the others: equally I didn’t forget everything I learned over the last three years. It’s an adventure that I’m looking forward to experiencing again.”

*So what brought us to Peru? What of the 2020 event?

Race director Etienne Lavigne told the AFP, since the race switched for security reasons in 2009 from its original route from Paris to the Senegalese capital Dakar, it has enjoyed multiple hosts in South America.

But this event year Argentina, Chile and Bolivia all pulled out for reasons of austerity, leaving Peru as the sole host of the 41st edition. "It will not be a discount Dakar," race director Etienne Lavigne told AFP at the unveiling of the course in Paris. "This is an extraordinary edition. It is the first time that the Dakar will take place in a single country. "This year, we will have to face difficult terrain that requires very good physical preparation. The dunes, the sand, are very challenging environments. "The change is reflected in the reduction of the rally from 9,000 kilometres over 14 stages in 2018 -- when it went through Peru, Argentina and Bolivia -- to 5,000 kilometres across 10 stages in 2019.

According to Lavigne, however, it will still present a tough challenge to the drivers and riders because it is predominantly across sand. "With the sand, we dive into the heart of the DNA of the Dakar," says Lavigne. "The origins, the mythology of the Dakar is built around the Sahara, its dunes, its great stretches of sand. Here, we are at the heart of the matter. "The shorter course is unlikely to put off the competition with all the big names of the recent past such as multiple winners Carlos Sainz, Stephane Peterhansel and Cyril Despres, among the 334 vehicles - cars, motorbikes, quad bikes, SxS, desert buggies and trucks - to have registered for the start on January 6.

Nine-time World Rally champion Sebastien Loeb also returns for the fourth time, hoping to become the first privateer to win the Dakar Rally since Jean-Louis Schlesser back in 2000. "They raise the standard of competition, they make it even more demanding," says Lavigne. "The more people, the stronger it is in terms of competition and uncertainty. They all have strengths, weak points that they will have to manage. "They will have to come to grips with this, and over ten days there are many genuine contenders for victory. "The race ends in Lima on January 17. The 2019 event will be run solely in Peru with the start and finish in Lima.

The 41st edition of the rally, which will take place between January 6-17 next year, is a looping 10-stage rally-route mapped around the Peruvian deserts, with organizers admitting it "promises to be one of the sandiest in the history of the rally". New rules, "Each stage will be harder than the previous, which will create a suspense filled battle just until the final days. "Not only is it the first time a sole country has hosted the rally, but new rules mean that competitors who suffer a mechanical breakdown or accident in the opening week that could lead to withdrawal will be able to rejoin the rally from the rest day on. Those rejoining would return to competition in a distinct classification to guarantee fair-play.

No big secret, the event organizers are considering the option to return to Africa in 2020

Turning to a potential return to Africa, Lavigne told AFP that worsening austerity in Argentina and Chile, coupled with general difficulties hosting the Dakar in South America meant other avenues were being pursued. Return to Africa is an option, "We already have some avenues open, notably in Algeria, Angola and Namibia, where we've had very high-level talks with for several months," said Lavigne. "If we can no longer host it in South America, we must find countries that have a topography that can offer up 10-12 days of competition," Lavigne said. "This can be found elsewhere provided you have a little bit of time to anticipate it. "The Dakar was moved from Africa in 2009 because of security issues that saw the 2008 rally cancelled.

The original press presentation of the 2019 Dakar Rally route, was postponed by organizer ASO after the last-minute withdrawal of Chile from the event. Initial plans for the 41st edition of the Dakar included a new country - Ecuador - in a route that would cross the South American continent from south to north, incorporating Chile and Peru. But Chile suddenly announced that it will not be on the route of the 2019 Dakar because of its "economic situation". "Next year we will not be in the Dakar, hoping to return in 2020 with all the protection to our cultural heritage and environment," stated Chile's Minister of Sport Pauline Kantor. That forced the Dakar to cancel the presentation of the route that had been planned for Monday and a conference for press and competitors in Barcelona. Conversations between ASO and various Latin American governments started in January after the end of the 2018 rally, with some preliminary talks having kicked off even earlier. But the first setback was the decision of Marc Coma, sporting director for the last three editions, at the beginning of February not to continue in his position to undertake "personal projects". ASO had to start the search for a new sporting director while also carrying out negotiations with the possible host countries.

Dakar organizers desire to return to Chile had been made clear by race director Etienne Lavigne during this year's edition. "We have invited Chileans from the new government to the Peruvian stages and also from Ecuador," he told Autosport. "We have contacts with the future leaders of the government of Chile. "If we have Peru and Chile we can start to build a 2020 story and see how we can put things together. "I would very much like to set up a start for the first time in Santiago and, if possible, a first stage in Valparaiso, a coastal city close to Santiago. "The new Chilean government elected in November did not take office until March 11, which delayed talks, and then made Sunday's announcement against expectations. This is the first time since 2009, the first year Dakar moved to South America, that organizers failed to confirm the route for the following year's event prior to the end of April. Paraguay, Bolivia, Argentina and Ecuador all remain possible countries for the 2020 route.
