National City California is the Home of the Hunt Special. Built in 1910, at least finished in 1910, it's manufacturing started in 1909. The very first purpose built Off-Road vehicle on the West Coast of North America.
19 years ago, its re-arrival back to National City after being reconstructed, from a long stay in a garage in Ensenada, Baja California Mexico, started the Heritage Days event we'll celebrate on OFF ROAD LIVE!
The 100th Birthday of the Hunt Special.
The Hunt Brothers, started out in National City in a carriage works brick building, once used in the construction of wagons, buckboards and carriages. The real transportation in the early days of the region, powered by the horse. Rails eventually connected the West, but horses and wagon roads were the norm, far into 1910. Wagon roads and telegraph lines were the transportation networks our country was built upon at the turn of 'last' century. 'Other' networks are being used in the turn of our recent century. The old carriage works building was the birthplace of the first purpose-built "Baja vehicle".
The Hunt Special was built for the son of the owner/builder of the Hotel Del Coronado Hotel in Coronado California, just across San Diego bay from National City. He travelled to his cattle ranch south of Ensenada Mexico often enough, that he was breaking his regular car way to often. He commissioned the Hunts to build his "Baja Rig" and 19 years ago the Hunt returned back to National City and the city fathers, Mayor Kile Morgan created "Heritage Day" in celebration of the Hunt Specials return, to its birthplace.
